The Vision, Mission, and Values

The aim of the Joint Postgraduate Programme in "Social Neuroscience, Social Pedagogy and Education" is to provide high-level postgraduate education to its students in contemporary educational and socio-pedagogical issues, through the interdisciplinary utilization of the research results of Social of Neuroscience, so that the graduates, as social pedagogues (according to international standards) and as qualified scientists in the utilization of the interdisciplinary synergy of Social Pedagogy, Education and Social Neuroscience, are able to study and understand the research results of Social of Neuroscience and utilize them in the design, planning, organization, and development of educational programmes, as well as Socio-Pedagogical interventions and educational policy, in the fields of formal, non-formal and informal education, as well as in any area of socio-pedagogical action, throughout the lifespan, so that they can effectively respond to the multiparametric, complex requirements and the modern needs of educational, pedagogical and social systems, which result from the constant changes in today's world.

Upon successful completion of the studies, graduates will be able to:

  • understand and use knowledge about the interaction of the social brain with the cognitive, emotional and social skills of students and adults so that they can more effectively support the cultivation of values, the process of learning, the manifestation of positive behaviors and the resolution problems,
  • know and apply methods and techniques of harnessing the plasticity of the brain, so that they can create appropriate learning experiences to improve the teaching and learning process, the development of relationships and social learning, in the fields of formal, non-formal and informal education across the lifespan,
  • to recognize the biological and social basis of learning to utilize it in matters of special learning needs and differentiated teaching,
  • to integrate the research results from Social Neuroscience into the education of children and adults, as well as into socio-pedagogical interventions, seeking to improve the level of education provided and the quality of life of the school class, the school and the wider community, upgrading the role of the child educator and adults, the school and the educational institution in general,
  • to make use of the theoretical, epistemological and methodological dimensions and applications of the versatile interdisciplinary areas of Social Pedagogy and Education as well as the role and multiple possibilities of the modern teacher and the social pedagogue in accordance with international data,
  • to develop the methodological possibilities and practices of educational and socio-pedagogical research, reinforced by modern data of Social Neuroscience, for the understanding, interpretation and effective treatment of educational and socio-pedagogical issues in various fields of education and social action,
  • to plan, implement and evaluate socio-pedagogical actions, interventions, as well as educational programs in the fields of formal, non-formal and informal education, with the aim of strengthening, the personal and social all-round development of people and the improvement and change of educational and social conditions,
  • to produce new knowledge through the study of interactions, interdisciplinary interdependencies and interconnections of biological mechanisms, ethics and human pedagogical and social processes,
  • recognize the importance of the interactions of cognitive, emotional, social and cultural factors in the development and effectiveness of socio-pedagogical and educational methods and strategies,
  • to investigate the educational, social and cultural conditions in different environments and fields of formal, non-formal and informal education, taking into account the dynamics and interactions created by Social Neuroscience and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT),
  • to utilize the dimensions and potential of the interdisciplinary synergy of Education, Social Pedagogy and Social Neuroscience in the production of educational and social policy,
  • to spread the knowledge and skills they acquired during their studies at DPMS by pursuing their interdisciplinary connection, their scientific extroversion and the potential exploitation of new professional opportunities, in different (in)disciplinary fields.
